The Four Visitors: A Christmas Simmer Pot Collection
Four Simmer Pot Kits Inspired by A Christmas Carol
I've read A Christmas Carol every December for longer than I can remember, and the older I get, the more I think Dickens was writing a spell. One cold, stingy man gets four visitors in a single night. He's shown his chains, his childhood, his table and his grave, and he wakes up on Christmas morning brand new. If that's not magic intervention, I don't know what is.
This collection follows Scrooge's long night, one visitor at a time. You can do them over four nights leading up to Christmas, or work through them at your own pace across the season.
Marley's Chains: For breaking the chains you forged in life. The first visitor comes dragging cash boxes, padlocks and ledgers. This is where you name your own chains: the grudges, the stinginess and the old debts of the heart. You'll write them on your ledger, ring a bell, and stir them loose link by link. The pot holds cloves, coarse salt, peppercorns, black tea, mullein, juniper and oats. You'll save its water for Christmas morning.
The Ghost of Christmas Past; For remembrance, tenderness for your younger self, and grief for the road not taken. She comes with summer flowers blooming out of season and light streaming from her head. This pot is for little Fan, for Belle, for Fezziwig's ball, and for the child you were. Rosemary, chamomile, calendula, lavender, rose, violet, apple, nutmeg, cinnamon and lemon peel simmer beside a white candle while you remember.
The Ghost of Christmas Present: For generosity, joy in the now, peace at the table, and abundance shared. The jolly giant sits on a throne heaped with fruit and holds a torch shaped like Plenty's horn. This pot fills the house like the Cratchits' kitchen, with orange, pear, chestnut, raisins, pudding spices, fir, frankincense and chamomile. You'll light a green candle for his torch, bless your table, and set something aside for Ignorance and Want, just as the Spirit asks.
The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come: For facing the future honestly, honoring endings, and choosing differently while there's still time. The last visitor never says a word. He only points. This pot is the hard one, with mugwort, wormwood, myrrh, cypress, star anise, bay and calendula, worked in silence by a black candle. You'll write the future you choose on a bay leaf and speak Scrooge's own vow. On Christmas morning, light the white candle and pour the saved water at your threshold, the same way Scrooge woke up and threw open his window.
