Yule Sun Return: A Two-Part Simmer Pot & Spell Kit For the Turning of the Wheel, Hope, Renewal, and the Darkest Night

I enjoy winter and the darkness. A lot of people don’t but I feel like it is when the Earth takes a deep breath and sighs out all the year’s problems and rests for just a bit.

There's something about the longest night of the year that settles down into your bones. The old folks knew it, and they’d bank the fire, gather close, and keep watch until the sun came back, because back then nobody took it for granted that it would.

This kit is made for keeping that vigil the old way, in two parts.

Simmer No. 1: The Longest Night You'll start this one on the evening of the solstice, after the dark has fully come down. Evergreen, cinnamon, apple and warm spice fill your house with a smell like a hearth fire and a forest at midnight. This is the pot for sitting with the dark instead of running from it, or letting it overtake you. Let go of what the year took from you, and honor what you carried through, while holding the space while the world rests. (If you know Mother Holle shaking out her featherbeds to make the snow fall, it's that kind of quiet and peace.)

Simmer No. 2: The Sun's Return The next morning you'll greet the sunrise with something bright. Sunny citrus, bay leaf for victory, and warming ginger wake up the house and call the light back in. This is your pot for hope, fresh starts and fanning that little new flame. The sun was reborn, and so are you.

• Instructions for both nights, with a short spell and working for each
